Shooter Deepak Kumar Khelo wants to make his mark at the India University Games

Gautam Buddha Nagar: Rifle shooter Deepak Kumar, representing Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, aims to qualify for the third edition of Khelo India University Games 2022, Uttar Pradesh. Deepak Khelo had participated in the previous edition of the India University Games but failed to make it to the medal tally. This edition of the Khelo India University Games is taking place in his home state and he is working hard to make his place on the podium.

Deepak, a native of Meerut, is a 10m air rifle shooter. He has participated in four national games and aims to win medals in both national and international competitions. He says, “My aim is to win medals here and in other tournaments as well. I will work hard with more dedication to reach my goal.”

Deepak fell in love with shooting when he was in school. He started shooting professionally in 2016 and so far has faced some of the top level shooters in the country. He also inspired his younger brother to take up sports.

Deepak comes from a middle class family of four members. Despite the difficulties, he is determined to make his father proud one day.

He said, “I want to continue shooting, but there are many financial constraints. The cost of the kit and the rifle is very high and it is very difficult for my father to bear such a huge expense. I am trying to make an impression in this tournament and secure the scholarships available for the best performers. The money will help financially.”

Every athlete draws inspiration and learns from senior players. Deepak is also not immune to this. When he was young, he was greatly inspired by Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra.

He said, “I fell in love with shooting when I saw Abhinav Bindra. My goal is to reach that height and win an Olympic gold medal for my country.

Deepak believes that the Khelo India University Games will inspire many young sports enthusiasts to take up sports as a career. He is proud that the third edition of the Khelo India University Games is being held in his home state.

He said, “This is a very proud moment for all the athletes of Uttar Pradesh as it is our home. The arrangements are very good and everything we need is being provided. I believe new faces will emerge from this tournament.
