Hamirpur, May 28 (Hindustan Times). Various subsidy schemes of the state government towards increasing the income of farmers and gardeners by encouraging crop diversification are showing commendable results. One of these schemes is the Polyhouse Grant Scheme of the Horticulture Department. Due to this scheme, today farmer Shiv Kumar of a small village called Ukhli in Hamirpur district is delivering flowers worth lakhs of rupees to Delhi. With this scheme of Horticulture Department, it seems that Shivakumar’s luck has flourished.
Shiv Kumar supported his family by selling vegetables in his village. The family consisting of wife Vandana, elderly mother and daughters could barely survive on the income from selling vegetables from morning till evening and a small amount of cultivable land. No other source of income was visible.
In such circumstances, Shiv Kumar came to know about the Polyhouse Grant Scheme of the Horticulture Department. He immediately contacted the officials of the department and got complete information regarding the scheme. The departmental officers guided Shiva Kumar and inspired him to set up the polyhouse. After getting 85 percent subsidy under the scheme, Shiv Kumar built a polyhouse of about 3000 square meters. For that he got a grant of about 28,000 rupees from the department.
After a seven-day training at the Agricultural University, Palampur, he started cultivating carnation flowers in polyhouses, which are in high demand in big cities like Delhi. Shiv Kumar’s experiment was completely successful and he started earning a decent income from a polyhouse. Nowadays he sells carnation flowers for Rs 5 to 7 lakh. Due to which not only Shiv Kumar’s family is living, but many others are also getting employment. Now they are preparing to build another polyhouse to expand their business, for which a grant proposal is to be approved by the horticulture department.
Shiv Kumar said that farmers and gardeners get so much help through this scheme with 85 percent subsidy.
