India gives high priority to its strategic partnership with Nigeria.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said during talks with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that India attaches high priority to its strategic partnership with Nigeria and will work towards further strengthening ties in various sectors, including defense, energy, and trade. In his televised opening address at the meeting, Modi described terrorism, separatism, piracy, and drug trafficking as major challenges and said the two countries will continue to work together to tackle them. Modi arrived in Abuja on Sunday morning. This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria after a gap of 17 years. “We attach high priority to our strategic partnership with Nigeria. I am confident that a new chapter will begin in our relations after our talks,” the Prime Minister said.

PM Modi made a big announcement for Nigeria.

Modi described the nearly 60,000 Indian diaspora as a key pillar of India-Nigeria relations and thanked Tinubu for ensuring their welfare. The Prime Minister also announced that India is sending 20 tonnes of relief material for Nigerians affected by last month’s floods. He also referred to India becoming a permanent member of the African Union at the G-20 Summit hosted by India last year and called it an important development. Before the delegation-level talks, Modi and Tinubu held a one-on-one meeting at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Prime Minister was also given a ceremonial welcome.

Several agreements are likely to be signed between the two sides after the delegation-level talks. Modi is in Nigeria as part of a three-nation visit. He will travel from Abuja to Brazil to attend the G-20 summit. His final destination will be Guyana. India-Nigeria relations were given the status of “strategic partnership” during the visit of then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Nigeria in October 2007. Nigeria has been a close partner of India for more than six decades. India established its diplomatic building in Lagos in November 1958, two years before Nigeria became independent in 1960.
