Lucknow : Bargarh is considered one of the most backward districts of Odisha, but the girls here have gone ahead in thinking. Denying backwardness, the girls here have now started dreaming and are also working hard to fulfill it. One of them is Nirmalya Raut, a member of the KIIT University team from Bhubaneswar that won the women’s rugby title at the Khelo India University Games-2022 being held for the first time in Uttar Pradesh.

The 18-year-old Nirmalaya top-scored with 10 points in her team’s 56-0 win against Mumbai University in the final match at the Guru Gobind Singh Sports College ground. Nirmalaya’s father Vasudev Raut is a farmer. Apart from mother and father, there is a brother and sister in the house. Somehow the father sent the daughter to Bhubaneswar to study and the daughter took up sports along with studies and because of these she is earning a name today.

Nirmalaya, who is participating in Khelo India University Games for the first time, said that it was great to come to Khelo India University Games. This was my first time. There are good arrangements for living, eating and drinking here and sports are also done well. I want to play for India in rugby and win a medal in the Asian Games. I am working hard for this. My next target is to make it to the Indian team.

Nirmalaya told that I have also played in Junior National and Senior National for Odisha. The Junior Nationals took place in 2022 in Bihar. In that, our team got the second position, while the 36th Senior National was held in Gujarat last year, in which Odisha’s team was the champion.

Nirmalaya told that after leaving home, she had taken admission in Kalinga Institute of Social Science and there she had seen this game for the first time. Nirmalaya said, “When I came to Bhubaneshwar for the first time, I saw this game. I liked this game and got into it. Now I want to get into this sport.”
