Washington, PTI: Kerala Story released in US and Canada: Controversial film ‘Kerala Story’ released in over 200 screens in US and Canada on Friday. Its director Sudipto Sen said the film is a mission that transcends the creative boundaries of cinema.

Sen told a group of Indian American journalists during a virtual press conference, “The country was in denial about the long-standing issue in the state of Kerala. Producer of the film Vipul Shah said, “The subject of the film was hidden from the public and should have been told. We made the film to start a worldwide discussion.” The film tells the story of three girls who convert to Islam and join ISIS.

“The film didn’t get any support initially”

Responding to a question, Shah said, “It is a very bold, honest and truthful film which did not get any support in the beginning. Today it is releasing worldwide with great success at the box office in just 6 days. I am ready for it.”

There is criticism about the teaser of the film.

The film, which has been strongly supported by the Hindu right wing including the BJP, has been boycotted by cinema halls in Tamil Nadu. Originally a teaser, it was criticized by many for claiming that 32,000 girls from Kerala have fled the state to join ISIS.

The makers of the film were earlier ordered by the Kerala High Court to remove the teaser from their promotional campaign along with social media posts. The West Bengal government led by Mamata Banerjee has banned the film. The film’s lead actress Adah Sharma gave her opinion on the importance of both the story and the content. He stressed on the need to eradicate such inhuman practices from the society.
