RAW New Boss: Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Ravi Sinha has been made the new chief of India’s intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). He will replace Samant Kumar Goyal, whose term ends on June 30, 2023. Ravi Sinha is also an expert in the affairs of neighboring countries.
Sinha, a 1988 batch IPS officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre, has been associated with RAW for over two decades. He is currently the second number officer in RAW. Before his promotion, he was in command of the operational branch of RAW. Sinha is known for his active and espionage skills. Tapan Deka, an officer of his own batch, is the Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief.
Proficiency in the use of technology
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of 59-year-old Sinha as RAW secretary for a two-year term. Sinha is credited with the introduction of advanced technology in intelligence gathering.
In his new role, Sinha is expected to integrate technology and human intelligence dimensions to meet today’s challenges.
Sinha, who studied at Delhi’s St. Stephen’s College, has worked in many fields and has a wealth of experience and knowledge.
Considered an expert on neighboring countries, Sinha’s appointment comes at a time when Pakistan is going through political and economic turmoil, some countries are making attempts to fuel Sikh extremism and Efforts are being made to promote violence in the Northeast, especially in Manipur.

Apart from this, Sinha has done a lot of work in Jammu and Kashmir, North East, and many countries. Prior to Sinha, Samant Goyal was appointed RAW chief in June 2019 for two years. Later he was given two extensions of one year each in 2021 and June 2022.
An expert in matters related to Jammu and Kashmir, Goyal is believed to have played a key role in planning the February 2019 surgical strike in Balakot, Pakistan. The surgical strike was done to avenge the Pulwama terror attack.
40 CRPF soldiers were martyred in the Pulwama attack. The attack was carried out by a suicide bomber of Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). In response to the attack, the Indian Air Force struck and destroyed a Jaish terrorist training camp in Balakot on February 26, 2019.
