New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new Parliament building on May 28. According to the Lok Sabha Secretariat, Speaker Om Birla met PM Modi on Thursday (May 18) and invited him to inaugurate the new Parliament building.

Om Birla tweeted that living up to the hopes and aspirations of over 140 crore citizens, the newly constructed Parliament House will also be a powerful vehicle to realize our vision of a developed India by 2047.

The Lok Sabha Speaker lauded the new Parliament House to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi on May 28 this year and said it would further enrich India’s grand democratic traditions.

Birla tweeted that the newly constructed Parliament House will further enrich India’s grand democratic traditions and constitutional values. In this building the honorable members will be able to perform their duties towards the country and citizens better. A Lok Sabha statement said that the construction of the new Parliament House in the national capital has been completed and is a symbol of the spirit of a self-reliant India.

The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone in 2020

The current Parliament building was completed in 1927 and is now turning 100 years old.

Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha passed resolutions requesting the government to construct a new building for Parliament.

The foundation stone of the new Parliament building was laid by PM Modi on December 10, 2020.

The newly constructed Parliament House has been completed in record time with quality construction. 888 members can sit in the Lok Sabha.

The present building of Parliament has a seating arrangement of 543 members in the Lok Sabha and 250 in the Rajya Sabha.

Keeping in view the future needs, arrangements have been made to hold 888 members of the Lok Sabha and 384 members of the Rajya Sabha in the newly constructed Parliament building. A joint session of both the Houses will be held in the Lok Sabha Chamber.

 

 

How many people can sit?

Like the old building, the new building will also have two separate chambers for Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. In the Lok Sabha Chamber where seating arrangements have been made for 888 members simultaneously. With this, 384 members will be able to sit in the Rajya Sabha chamber. In the old building, the joint session was held in the Central Hall, but in the new building it will be held in the Lok Sabha Hall, which can accommodate up to 1280 MPs if needed.
