The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights yesterday released new guidelines for the benefit of child actors in the entertainment industry. According to the new guidelines, if any content on the Instagram reel, social media and OTT platforms causes mental or physical pain to children, there is a provision of punishment of up to three years.

The guidelines have expanded their scope to cover social media and OTT platforms for the first time. The chairman of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights said that the draft guidelines released last year sought suggestions from stakeholders in this regard.

Strict rules of the new guidelines

According to the guidelines, before a child participates in any audio-visual media production or any commercial programme, the producer will require the permission of the concerned District Magistrate. Kanungo said junk food including chips, carbonated drinks and other snacks and drinks should not be advertised during children’s programs or on children-only channels.

To prevent exploitation of children

He said that any producer of audio-visual media production or commercial program involving the participation of a child should ensure that no such child is abused, induced or exploited during the process of production and shooting.

Why was a new guideline needed?

Some laws and regulations regarding child labor currently exist but there was no effective system to protect the rights of child actors in the entertainment industry, which mostly consisted of actors between the ages of 15-18. These new guidelines, which will soon become law, will also become the norm for child protection.
