So let us know what is the difference between Sharadiya and Chaitra Navratri and what is the religious significance of both Navratris.

Chaitra Navratri

Every year, Chaitra Navratri begins on the Pratipada date of the Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. According to the religious story associated with Chaitra Navratri, the terror of a demon named Mahishasura had increased a lot on earth. Mahishasura had a boon that no god or demon would be able to defeat him. There was chaos everywhere due to the terror of Mahishasura. After this, all the gods prayed to Mother Parvati for their protection. Then Goddess Parvati manifested nine forms from her part, which the gods empowered by giving their weapons. It is said that this whole process started from the Pratipada date of Chaitra month and lasted for a full 9 days. According to beliefs, since then the tradition of celebrating Navratri in the month of Chaitra started.

Autumn Navaratri

The holy festival of Sharadiya Navratri is celebrated in the month of Ashwin. Every year, Sharadiya Navratri begins from the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month. According to the mythological story associated with Sharadiya Navratri, it was in the month of Ashwin that Maa Durga fought with Mahishasura for nine days. On the tenth day, Maa Durga killed Mahishasura. The tenth day of Sharadiya Navratri is celebrated as Vijayadashami. It is believed that since then nine days have been dedicated to the worship of Shakti. Apart from this, the autumn season begins in the month of Ashwin, hence it is also called Sharadiya Navratri. Lord Rama killed Ravana on the tenth day of Sharadiya Navratri. Sharadiya Navratri is considered a symbol of the victory of Dharma over Adharma and truth over untruth.
