Eight people have died following devastating floods in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. After heavy rains, the roads were flooded and people had to take shelter on the roofs of their houses. Thousands of people have been evacuated from the flood affected areas. Civil Defense Minister Nelo Musumesi said half of the rain had fallen in the past 36 hours.

Muddy water flooded the roofs of parked cars in the streets of Faenza, Cesena and Forli, south of Imola. Sewers in many shops also got filled and people had to take shelter on their roofs.

According to Musumesi, 50,000 people are now forced to live in the dark as the power system has been disrupted. Prime Minister Georgia Maloney tweeted her solidarity with those affected and said the government stood ready to intervene with the necessary assistance. The government announced that the emergency services needed to focus on rescue efforts.

Formula One race suspended

Sunday’s car racing championship Formula One Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola was postponed on Wednesday due to flooding. This area is one of the most affected districts. “Due to the flooding it is not possible to hold Formula One events safely for our fans, teams and staff,” the organizers said in a statement.
