The Supreme Court has given SEBI three months to investigate the Adani Group
The Supreme Court has given SEBI three more months to probe the Adani Group of Hindenburg Research. The court has to complete the SEBI investigation and submit its report by August 14. Earlier, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to tell us what you have done so far. We had already given you two months and now we have extended it till August which will be five months.
The Chief Justice said that keeping in view the time limit, the expert committee constituted by the court submitted its report within two months as ordered by the court. The court said that the matter will now be heard on 11 July 2023. The Chief Justice has asked the expert committee to stay to assist the court. Until then, he requested the committee to hold a mutual discussion so that the court can be further assisted during the next hearing. The Chief Justice also directed to make the report of the expert committee available to all the parties and their lawyers.
Earlier during the hearing of the case, senior Supreme Court advocate Prashant Bhushan told the court that SEBI has been probing the Adani group since 2016. He asked what the investigation had revealed so far. Prashant Bhushan said that it is clear that efforts are being made to save the Adani Group. He said that despite receiving many complaints in recent years, nothing has been done. Prashant Bhushan said that if Adani’s shares had risen 10,000 percent in a year, he should have been cautious. He asked what happened to these tests.
Prashant Bhushan told the court that a year-and-a-half ago, it appeared from questions and answers in Parliament that Sebi was probing the Adani group. Regarding this, SG Tushar Mehta said that we have no objection if it is demanded to keep all the investigation cases on record.
