May 22 in the pages of history: Interesting story of India’s first Brabourne Stadium

[ad_1]

The date of May 22 is recorded in the history of the country and the world for many important reasons. The importance of this date is also from the cricket grounds of India. In fact, on May 22, 1936, the foundation stone of India’s first cricket stadium was laid in Mumbai. The Brabourne Stadium is owned by the Cricket Club of India. It is located near Marine Drive in South Mumbai. It is named Brabourne because its foundation stone was laid by Lord Brabourne, the then Governor of Mumbai. The first officially inaugurated match was played here on December 7, 1937, between CCI XI and Lord Tennyson’s XI. Due to frequent ticketing disputes with the Cricket Club of India, the Bombay Cricket Association built the famous Wankhede Stadium, about 700 meters from the Brabourne Stadium. Thereafter, the stadium declined in importance and was used only for first-class matches.
