The massive victory of the Congress in Karnataka has raised questions that who among Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar will get the chief minister’s post in the state? There will be a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party on Sunday evening for the selection of the Chief Minister. However, earlier sources are saying that Siddaramaiah may be made the CM.
Congress leader Siddaramaiah, 75, was brimming with new energy when he arrived to address a press conference in Mysuru on Saturday. Siddaramaiah said that this (Karnataka election result) would prove to be an important step towards the victory of the Congress in 2024.
According to the figures of the Election Commission till 11:30 pm, the Congress has got a majority. The Election Commission said the Congress has won 135 seats and is leading in one. At the same time, BJP has won 65 seats and JDS has won 19 seats.
Why is Siddaramaiah’s claim strong?
Siddaramaiah, associated with the ‘Janata Parivar’ for nearly two-and-a-half decades and known for his anti-Congress stand, joined the Congress in 2006 and is now considered the frontrunner for the chief minister’s post in Karnataka.
The senior Congress leader had said many times before the assembly elections that this is my last election. After this I will retire from electoral politics. However, on Saturday, Siddaramaiah indicated that he was looking at future possibilities. He has once again expressed his desire to occupy the post of Chief Minister. Siddaramaiah and Congress state unit president DK Shivakumar are the main contenders for the chief minister’s post. Siddaramaiah held the reins of the state as the Chief Minister from 2013 to 2018.
Siddaramaiah has become CM leaving Kharge behind.
Siddaramaiah became the Chief Minister in 2013 by defeating Mallikarjun Kharge (currently the National President of Congress) and the then Union Labor Minister. Siddaramaiah had joined the Congress in 2006. Prior to this, he was associated with the ‘Janata Parivar’ for nearly two and a half decades and was known for his anti-Congress stand.
After a fractured mandate in 2004, the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) in Karnataka, led by Congress leader N. Dharam Singh was the Chief Minister while the then JD(S) leader Siddaramaiah was made the Deputy Chief Minister.
Siddaramaiah comes from the Kuruba community
Siddaramaiah belongs to the Kuruba community, which has the third largest population in the state. After Siddaramaiah was sacked from the JD(S), critics of the party claimed that he was dropped because JD(S) leader H.D. Deve Gowda wanted to make Kumaraswamy the leader of the party. Even then Siddaramaiah had spoken of ‘retiring from politics’ and returning to the profession of advocacy.
