The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) on Wednesday defended “dynamic and flexible” cinema ticket pricing, which fluctuates based on factors such as location, day of the week, type of seat, film format, and cinema format. MAI stated filmmaker Karan Johar’s recent comments that cinema exhibitors are now using digital mediums to gauge audience demand and optimize pricing. Brushing aside Johar’s comments, MAI quoted its president Kamal Gianchandani as saying that the average price (ATP) across all cinemas in India is Rs 130 per ticket. Karan Johar had accused cinema exhibitors of charging high prices in a statement.
The country’s largest cinema chain
MAI said that PVR-INOX, the country’s largest cinema chain, recorded an ATP of Rs 258 for FY2023-24. Additionally, the average per capita expenditure (SPH) on F&B at PVR-INOX stood at Rs 132 during this period. It said that this makes the total average expenditure of a family of four to Rs 1,560, which is quite different from the figure of Rs 10,000 quoted in the media report. MAI represents 11 cinema chains like PVR-INOX, which operates about 75 percent of India’s multiplex industry.
responsible for the high prices
According to media reports, recently Karan Johar, while participating in a panel discussion with some other filmmakers, had alleged that cinema exhibitors are responsible for the high prices of tickets and food and beverages (F&B). He said that family members say that they do not like to go to the cinema hall, as the average cost including tickets and popcorn etc. for a family of four can be Rs 10,000, which is not in their financial planning.
