The story of the eagle and the jackal of Jitiya fast
According to the legend, an eagle and a female jackal lived on a tree. They got along well. The eagle and the female jackal always kept a portion of food for each other. One day the women of the village were preparing for the Jitiya fast. Seeing them, the eagle also felt like fasting. Then the eagle went and narrated the entire incident to the female jackal. Then both of them decided that they would also keep the Jitiya fast. But the next day when both of them kept the fast, the female jackal started feeling both hungry and thirsty. The female jackal started roaming around in hunger. On the day of the fast, someone died in the village, and seeing this, the female jackal’s mouth started watering. Then the female jackal satisfied her hunger by eating the half-burnt body. She forgot that she had kept the Jitiya fast. There the eagle kept the Jitiya fast and Paran with full devotion and heart.
Story of Lord Jyutvahana
In the next birth, the eagle and the jackal were born as real sisters in the house of a king. The eagle became the elder sister and the jackal the younger sister. Both were married in the king’s house. The eagle gave birth to seven sons, whereas the jackal’s children would die as soon as they were born. Seeing her sister happy and content, the jackal became jealous from within and got all the seven sons of the eagle killed. She got the heads of all the seven sons of the jackal cut off and sent them to the eagle’s house. Seeing all this, Lord Jyutvaahan made the heads of all the seven brothers from clay joined the heads of all the seven to their bodies sprinkled nectar on them, and brought them back to life. The severed heads sent by the jackal turned into fruits. The jackal became anxious when she did not hear the sound of crying from her sister and went there to know the whole matter. When the jackal told everything to the eagle, it is said that then the eagle told her everything about the previous birth and after hearing all this, the jackal started repenting for her mistake. After this, the eagle took the female jackal to the same tree, and by the grace of Lord Jyutvaahan, she remembered everything. The female jackal was so saddened by this that she died near the same tree. When the king came to know about this, he got the female jackal cremated near the same tree.
