Jagannath, a Divyang tribal student, set an example by writing with his feet rather than his hands

Handicapped, poor at home but with immense willpower and hard work, Jagannath from a tribal family has crossed the threshold of primary education by writing on foot. Jagannath dreams of becoming a teacher. He says, ‘I want to be a teacher for people like me.’ Apart from studies, he loves to play football and his favorite player is Messi.
His family named him Jagannath because he was born without both arms. A constant companion was poverty and misfortune. Mother died after birth of Jagannath. Father also lives elsewhere. Jagannath grows up with his elderly grandmother, where Bhua takes care of him.

Jagannath was born in a tribal family in Shimla village of Durgapur Gram Panchayat located in Memari 1 block of East Burdwan district of West Bengal. He is handicapped since birth. Neither palm nor fingers. Jagannath’s mother abandoned him after his birth. Jagannath grew up with his elderly grandmother. However, Jagannath was not deprived of the love of his grandmother, aunt and grandfather.

The marriage took place in the village of Bhuana. Bhuiya’s earnings support the mother’s family and Jagannath’s education. Jagannath wanted to be a teacher since childhood. Learned to write by foot. Despite coming from a limited family, Jagannath was admitted to the village primary school to get an education. Since then Jagannath started writing. As time passed, Jagannath became adept at writing with his feet. Jagannath passed class after class and cleared the final examination of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education this year.
Jagannath was the only student from the Shimla tribal pada to appear in the secondary examination. The examiners made every effort to ensure that Jagannath did not face any difficulty in passing the exam. There was a big smile of success in Jagannath Mandi after the Madhyamik/10th result was declared last Friday. He has passed with 258 marks. Village woman Sambari Saran said, ‘A boy who has no hands has passed the first major exam of life by writing with his feet… We are very happy. If Jagannath gets government help then his studies will get help.
