Important news has come out for diabetes patients. Now examination of eyes and feet has been made mandatory for patients after 5 years of diagnosis of diabetes. The Directorate General of Health Services has shared a new protocol for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes patients with doctors across the country. This new protocol provides information about the management of the disease for both old and new diabetes patients.

According to the new guidelines, when diabetic patients come for medical consultation five years after diagnosis, they will undergo funduscopy (retinal examination), neuropathy (feet examination), urine test, creatinine ratio, thyroid TSH test and lipid profile (blood It will be mandatory to undergo the test. Through these tests, it can be easily ascertained how much and what kind of harm diabetes has caused to the patients in the last five years.

Scientists at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have prepared a Standard Treatment Workflow (STDW) and sent it to doctors. Besides, standards have also been set for referring diabetic patients to high-level hospitals. Under this, the patient can be referred in case of uncontrolled hypoglycemia. This happens when there is too much sugar (glucose) in the patient’s blood. Additionally, the patient or family may be trained on topics such as insulin administration (management of chronic diabetes), home blood sugar testing, and referral for severe diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

This new protocol will ensure better care for diabetic patients and will also ensure that any complications are detected early. With timely diagnosis and proper treatment, it becomes easier to control diabetes and the problems caused by it can be avoided.
