IOA debars WFI officials from carrying out administrative work of the federation with immediate effect

New Delhi : The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Saturday barred all outgoing officials of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) from carrying out any administrative work of the WFI with immediate effect. The IOA has issued a letter in this regard.

The letter states, “With reference to the Ministry’s letter dated 24.04.2023, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) was informed of the administrative vacuum in the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). IOA was requested to form a temporary committee or Ad-hoc Committee to conduct elections to the Executive Council of WFI and manage the affairs of WFI, the IOA Executive Council in its emergency meeting held on 27th April, 2023 unanimously resolved that An ad-hoc committee should be constituted to handle the matters.”

The letter further said, “IOA has appointed an Ad-hoc Committee vide order dated 03.05.2023 consisting of Bhupender Singh Bajwa, (Member of the Executive Council of IOA) and Suma Shirur (Sportsperson of Outstanding Merit of IOA). A retired Judge of the Hon’ble Supreme Court or any High Court of India will be involved with the Ad-hoc Committee to ensure that the fresh elections of WFI are smooth, transparent and legal. The ad hoc committee has already started functioning.”

The letter said, “In pursuance of the above, it is clarified that the Ad-hoc Committee appointed by the IOA for the discipline of Wrestling shall perform all the duties and responsibilities of the National Sports Federations as mentioned in the Sports Code. While the ad-hoc committee is in existence, the outgoing office-bearers of the WFI shall have no role in any work of the federation for the discipline of wrestling and shall not participate in any administrative, financial, regulatory or other functions. Therefore, the outgoing office-bearers of WFI are directed to immediately hand over all official documents including website management, financial instruments, login details for making entries for participation of Indian players in international events, etc. to the Ad-hoc Committee.”

Earlier on April 24, the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) would constitute an ad-hoc committee to conduct the elections to the Executive Committee of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) within 45 days. Whose task will be to manage the day-to-day affairs of the federation including selection of athletes and making entries for participation of sportspersons in international events.

This committee will function for an interim period till the new executive committee takes over.
