There has been a trend in Bollywood for years. The biggest and most awaited films of Bollywood are mostly released on Diwali weekend. Diwali is the biggest and most awaited festival for Hindi-speaking people in India and abroad. There are also the most holidays on this festival, so it is a good opportunity to release these films. Makers expect that there will be a crowd in the theaters to watch the film. Usually, big stars start reserving these dates for their film in advance at the beginning of the year. It has often been seen that films released on Diwali achieve box office success, but sometimes the matter turns out to be the opposite. Despite the publicity and power of big stars, the films flop at the box office. The same thing happened with a film released on Diwali six years ago.
The film was made on a mega-budget
Vijay Krishna Acharya’s ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ was the most expensive Indian film made at that time. The film was released in November 2018 and its estimated budget was Rs 300 crore. Trade pundits had said that the film would have to earn more than Rs 500 crore in India to be a hit. Due to the star power of Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Katrina Kaif, the makers felt that they would earn a lot, but this did not happen and they had to pay a heavy price.
Somehow I was able to get the budget out.
Thugs of Hindostan had a good start by breaking all collection records by earning Rs 52 crore on the first day. Then the game changed. Bad reviews and extremely negative word of mouth sank the film and it failed to even save its face. It earned just Rs 6 crore on the fourth day and less than a crore by the second Monday. In the end, Thugs of Hindostan earned just Rs 151 crore in India and Rs 322 crore worldwide, which is a disappointing figure.
Makers took responsibility
By the second week, exhibitors were blaming Yash Raj Films and Aamir Khan for their losses. Many shows were going empty across the country. Even theater owners started demanding their money back. After this whole incident, YRF took responsibility and paid the exhibitors minimum guarantee deals. ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ is one of the biggest flops at the box office in the history of Indian cinema. Aamir Khan also took responsibility for the failure of this film.
