Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Papua New Guinea to participate in the 3rd India-Pacific Island Cooperation (FIPIC) Summit there. Co-chairing the summit with Prime Minister James Marape of Papua New Guinea, Prime Minister Modi said he (James Marape) could see India as a reliable partner. He also assured Marape of all possible help.

FIPIC was launched during Modi’s visit to Fiji in 2014. The summit is taking place at a time when China is making efforts to increase its military and diplomatic influence in the region.

Addressing the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, James Marape, Prime Minister Modi said, ‘India is proud to be your development partner. Whether it is humanitarian aid or your development, you can look to India as a reliable partner and trust. We are ready to share our experience and capabilities with you without hesitation. Be it digital technology or space technology, health security or food security, climate change or others, we are with you at every step.

 

 

 

Like you, we believe in multilateralism and support a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific, the Prime Minister said. PM Modi said that he respects the sovereignty and integrity of all countries. The voice of the Global South will also have to be raised from the heights in the United Nations Security Council. Therefore, reform of international institutions should be our common priority.

Referring to the Kovid epidemic, PM Modi said, ‘The Corona epidemic has affected the countries of the Global South the most. Many challenges related to climate change, natural disaster, hunger, poverty and health already exist, new problems are emerging. On whom we used to trust. They realize that they are not standing with us in our time of need. I am glad that India stands shoulder to shoulder with its Pacific island friends in times of crisis. Whether it is a vaccine made in India or essential medicines, wheat or sugar, India is helping all countries according to its capacity. As I have said earlier, you are a vast ocean country and not a small island state. This ocean of yours connects you with India.

 

 

 

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape (FIPIC) said, ‘We all share a history. History unites the countries of the Global South. I thank you (PM Modi) for assuring me in the bilateral meeting. Hope you will advocate for issues related to the Global South when you host the G20 this year.
