Guyana girls hostel fire kills 20 students

A fire broke out in a school hostel in the South American country of Guyana on Monday morning. 20 people died in the fire. Dozens of people have been injured and have been admitted to the hospital for treatment. Relief and rescue work is going on at the spot. The death toll may increase as the number of injured is not yet known.

According to media reports, the school hostel in which the fire broke out is located in the central Guyana city of Mahdia. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be known. According to local media, 20 people have been confirmed dead so far. All the children are said to be among those who died. These children were trapped in the hostel due to the fire.

According to officials, the fire broke out around midnight on Sunday when most of the children were asleep. Fire brigade officials say that due to bad weather it is becoming difficult to control the fire. The condition of some children among the injured is said to be critical and preparations are being made to take them to the capital George Town.


President expressed condolences

Guyana’s President Irfan Ali has also expressed grief over the incident. He said, “It is a very terrible and painful accident. I can’t imagine the pain of parents and children and we as a country have to deal with this.”

The injured were taken to the hospital by air ambulance

According to media reports, plans are being made to take 7 injured children to Georgetown by air ambulance. Along with this, 5 aircraft are also reaching the spot. It is being claimed that the students are still trapped in the hostel, who can be heard screaming. The town of Mahdia in Guyana is known for its gold mines and the school is attended by students from surrounding towns and villages.
