In a gesture aimed at alleviating the burden of inflation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a reduction of up to ₹100 in the price of gas cylinders on the occasion of International Women’s Day. With this gift from the Modi government, the people of Uttar Pradesh also received a special offering from the Yogi government. The Yogi administration in Uttar Pradesh is set to distribute free cylinders to nearly 20 million families during the festival of Holi, as a gift in conjunction with the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. The announcement for this initiative was made by the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet in November 2023.

Understanding Yogi Government’s Free Cylinder Scheme

On the occasion of Holi, the Yogi government will distribute free cylinders to 20 million beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme. This announcement was made by the Yogi administration in November 2023. According to the announcement, the Uttar Pradesh government will distribute free cylinders to beneficiaries twice a year, during Diwali and Holi. This initiative is expected to benefit nearly 20 million families in the state. Notably, the Yogi government will incur a cost of ₹2312 crore for this scheme. Additionally, the government will also provide free gas cylinders to people on Dhanteras.

Terms and Conditions of the Free Cylinder Scheme

The scheme comes with certain terms and conditions set by the government. As per these conditions, only residents of Uttar Pradesh will be eligible for this benefit. This means that only residents of Uttar Pradesh will benefit from this scheme. To avail of a free gas cylinder under this scheme, linking one’s bank account with Aadhaar is mandatory. Moreover, being eligible for the Ujjwala scheme is essential to avail of the benefits of this scheme.

Understanding the Ujjwala Yojana

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016. Under this scheme, the government provides a subsidy of ₹300 per cylinder, which was previously ₹200. This subsidy will be available until March 31, 2025. Under this scheme, families are entitled to 12 subsidized cylinders per year. So far, more than 90 million families across the country have been provided with free gas cylinder connections under this scheme.

In conclusion, the initiatives taken by the Modi and Yogi governments to provide relief to citizens through schemes like the reduction in LPG cylinder prices and distribution of free cylinders during festivals are commendable. These steps not only ease the financial burden on households but also contribute to the government’s efforts towards social welfare.
