The French government has taken a new decision to curb carbon emissions, which has caused an uproar in the airline industry. The French government has banned the use of airplanes for short distance travel. According to reports, the French government has decided that the journey which takes less than two and a half hours by train can no longer be done by flight.

Emphasis on improving trains

French Transport Minister Clément Beaune said in an interview that this is a necessary and important step to reduce carbon emissions. We want to reduce the carbon usage in our lives, so air travel is not suitable for short distances. Short distance travel by train is fast and regular. According to the new law, commitment is being made regarding train services. As per law, it is being ensured that train services are on all short routes so that passengers can reach on time. The new law ensures that passengers making short journeys can get a second train on the same route after eight hours, so that they can return.

Aircraft industry objected

The government is also banning the use of jet planes for short journeys to make the environment cleaner. According to a report by the European Federation for Clean Transport, jets pollute 14 times more per person than commercial flights. At the same time, pollution increases up to 50 percent compared to trains. The aviation industry is upset with this decision of the government. This has been opposed by Laurent Doncel, the airlines’ interim head for Europe. He said that this decision of the government will have minimum impact on carbon mitigation. Instead of imposing restrictions, the government should find a concrete and real solution.
