What is CAA: Under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 14 people were granted citizenship on Wednesday in New Delhi. Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla gave these people citizenship certificates. The Modi government had issued a notification of CAA on March 11. The Home Ministry spokesperson said, these people had applied online for citizenship on the portal, after which their application was processed and then citizenship certificates were given. The Home Secretary congratulated all the applicants and told the special points of CAA while granting citizenship.

With the granting of citizenship to these people, the process of granting citizenship to non-Muslim migrants who came to India after being persecuted in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh has also started. CAA was brought in December 2019 to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslim migrants who came to India on or before 31 December 2014 and were victims of persecution in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

These include people from Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian communities. After becoming a law, the CAA got the President’s assent but the rules under which Indian citizenship was to be granted were released on March 11 this year after a delay of more than four years.
