Fierce fire in girls hostel in Guyana, South America, 18 girls and caretaker’s son killed

At least 19 children were killed in a fire that broke out in a girls’ dormitory at a school in the South American country of Guyana. The fire incident took place in the girls’ hostel of the secondary school. However, the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. However, the death toll is expected to rise as the number of seriously injured is high.

Refuting reports that 20 people were killed in the Mahdia Secondary School fire in Guyana, a spokesman for the national fire department said the country was shaken by the horrific incident. At least 9 other people were injured in the accident. One victim was rescued, but is on a ventilator and is in critical condition.

The incident took place in the girls’ hostel of the secondary school.

According to a press statement issued by the Guyana government, the incident occurred at a secondary school in the town of Mahdia, 320 km south of the capital Georgetown. The hostel accommodates tribal girls in the age group of 12 to 18 years. The dead included 18 girls and a boy who was the son of the caretaker. Guyana’s President Irfan Ali described the incident as “sad, painful and terrible”.
