Russia has banned the entry of 500 citizens including former US President Barack Obama. Russia’s foreign ministry said Moscow took the action in response to recently announced sanctions by Washington. The ministry also said on Friday that Russia had also rejected a US appeal for consular access for detained Wall Street Journal reporter Ivan Gershkovich, who was arrested in March on suspicion of espionage.

A statement has been issued from Moscow that recently when Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was going to the United Nations, the US had denied visas to media persons traveling with him. Russia has taken this step in response.

America announced sanctions

The statement said that Washington should have known long ago that not a single hostile attack on Russia would go unpunished. Earlier on Friday, the US announced more than 300 sanctions against Russia aimed at punishing Russia for its invasion of Ukraine and intensifying tough sanctions.

Sanctions were imposed to crack down on Putin

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement that the sanctions were put in place to curb Putin’s ability to launch savage attacks. It will further our sincere efforts to undermine Russian efforts to evade sanctions.

22 people, 104 organizations banned

The Treasury Department said it has imposed sanctions on 22 individuals and 104 entities in more than 20 countries or jurisdictions. It includes companies that import or export electronics goods, semiconductors, microelectronics to Russia.
