Excluding WhatsApp, Meta’s Facebook Fined $1.3 Billion

A major ruling came on Monday against social media company Meta for violating EU data protection rules. Monday’s ruling fined Meta a record 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion) and ordered it to stop transferring data collected from Facebook users in Europe to the United States. This is the biggest decision on legislation in the five years since the EU enacted the landmark data privacy law.

Ireland’s Data Protection Commission has fined Meta Company under the Act. The European Union has named this law as the General Data Protection Regulation. The regulator has ruled that the company has failed to implement the decision taken by the Supreme Court of the European Union in the year 2020. Data transferred across the Atlantic Ocean does not receive adequate protection from US spy agencies.

The decision issued on Monday only applies to Facebook. This decision does not apply to Instagram and WhatsApp. Company Meta manages Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Meta said after the verdict that it would appeal against the regulator’s decision. The ruling will not immediately block Facebook’s service in the European Union.
