Hiroshima: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi while unveiling the statue of peace ambassador Mahatma Gandhi installed near Bomb Dome here said that even today the world trembles on hearing the name of Hiroshima.

The Prime Minister of India, who arrived in Hiroshima on Friday as a representative of the invited nation for the G-7 countries meeting, made the following remarks while unveiling the 42-inch bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi installed here today (Saturday). Here is the Bomb Dome on the banks of the Motoyasu River. It seemed that exclamations were coming out of his heart.

He said that I would like to thank the Government of Japan for setting up this statue in Hiroshima and giving me the opportunity to unveil it.

It is well known that the US dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Almost the entire city was wiped out and over 140,000 civilians were killed. A Bomb Dome has been built in his memory on the banks of the Motoyasu River. A 42-inch bronze statue of the Sabarmati saint was built near it by the Japanese government. It was unveiled by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.

In his brief speech on the occasion, the Prime Minister of India said that the world today is facing climate change and terrorism. In these, the crisis of seasonal change can be overcome only by following the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. The biggest tribute we can pay to Mahatma Gandhi is that we follow his ideals. The statue of Mahatmaji inspires us to follow the path of non-violence.

He further said, ‘This is a great moment for me. I came to know that the branch of the Bodhi tree which I had brought with me from India to Japan has also been planted here in Hiroshima. I have given that branch as a gift to the Prime Minister of Japan. The purpose behind this is to make people understand the importance of peace. I end by saluting Mahatma Gandhi, the apostle of peace. At this time the Prime Minister of Japan was also present there.
