Effect of high temperature on sowing performance of summer crops.

Mumbai: In the current season, the area under summer crops has been marginally 3.30 percent less as compared to the same period last year. As per the agriculture ministry data, the area under cultivation during the current year period is 69.97 lakh hectare as compared to 71.92 lakh hectare as on May 19 last year.

The prevailing high temperature in the country is believed to have affected the sowing performance.

Cultivation of pulses has remained high in general while that of rice has shown a decline. In the current season, paddy cultivation has decreased by seven per cent to 28.07 lakh hectare as against 30.28 lakh hectare last year.

Cultivation of pulses has increased to 19.81 lakh hectare as against 19.09 lakh hectare. The figures also show that the sowing of moong has increased to 16.33 lakh hectare.

In durum, crops of cereals, millet, jowar have been taken more whereas maize is decreasing. Sowing of oilseeds seems to be marginally less. This figure for the current year is 10.17 lakh hectare as against 11.02 lakh hectare in the previous year. Groundnut sowing area has decreased to 4.94 lakh hectare as against 5.46 lakh hectare. A decrease of 9.50 percent is being seen in the cultivation of groundnut.
