Why do earthquakes happen?

The interior of the Earth is made up of different plates. These are called ‘tectonic plates’. There are seven such plates inside the Earth. Each of these plates is about 100 kilometers thick. Often these plates move and collide with adjacent plates. Sometimes this friction increases to such an extent that one plate slides over the other, causing movement in the surface. Earthquakes below magnitude 5 are generally less damaging. An earthquake of magnitude 5 or more can cause damage.
