Diwali will be an official holiday in the United States! Preparation of legislation in the Legislative Assembly

In view of the increasing influence of people of Indian origin in America, preparations are on to give an official holiday on Diwali. This initiative has taken place in New York, where a resolution in this regard has been introduced in the New York Assembly, after which the way will be cleared for celebrating Diwali holidays. Along with Diwali, the proposal makes Lunar New Year a public holiday in New York.

New York Assembly Speaker Carl Hastie issued a statement on Wednesday confirming the move, saying it was being done in recognition of New York’s rich and diverse culture. He said that ‘before the end of the legislative session, the proposal to give holidays for Lunar New Year and Diwali can be approved’.

The session of the New York Assembly will continue till June 8. It is believed that the proposal can be approved by the end of the session. The proposal, called the Diwali Day Act, would make the Diwali holiday the 12th public holiday in New York. This will greatly benefit the community of Indian origin living in America and they will be able to celebrate Diwali well with their family and friends.

 

New York State Assemblywoman Jennifer Rajkumar and Senator Joe Adabo have called for New York City schools to declare a Diwali holiday. New York State Councilman Shekhar Krishnan and Councilwoman Linda Lee also supported the resolution.
