China increasing naval engagement with Pakistan: China wants to cooperate with Pakistan Army by selling arms and training soldiers and this move is likely to anger India. India cannot agree to provide military assistance to its adversary, Pakistan.
Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu has called on the Chief of Naval Staff of Pakistan that the navies of our two countries should expand their mutual cooperation in more areas, so as to keep their territories safe.
Li Shangfu met with Pakistan Navy Chief Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi in Beijing on Monday. He said that their military ties are also very important for the relations between their two countries.
Li Shangfu communicated with Niazi, saying that the two countries should work together to protect their territories and expand cooperation and partnership to new areas.
Niazi remarked that the Pakistan Navy is ready to work with China to keep its territories secure and stable.
China is ready to work more closely with the Pakistani military a few days ago, said Zhang Yuxia, vice chairman of the Chinese Central Military Commission and China’s highest-ranking military leader.
Timothy Heath, a senior expert at the US think tank Rand Corporation, said the arms trade is the starting point for China and Pakistan to work together.
China considers Pakistan an important partner in securing its trade routes in the Indian Ocean. Therefore, China has a keen interest in selling, modernizing, training and exchanging arms with the Pakistani military. In turn, Heath believes that Pakistan wants to modernize its navy and intimidate India.
“Cooperating with Pakistan and helping modernize Pakistan’s navy will help China expand its presence in the Indian Ocean and gain access to important ports such as Gwadar (Pakistan),” the Chinese foreign minister said. Such naval cooperation agreements help Pakistan and China to keep a close watch on India.
India and China have been competing for power in the Indian Ocean region. Also, both the countries keep fighting on their borders in the Himalayas.
China and India have long been at loggerheads over their 3,488-kilometre (2,167 mi) long border. This boundary is not clearly demarcated even today. In 2020, the border dispute worsened and soldiers died. Both the armies are still trying to resolve the dispute through a series of talks.
Long Jingchun, head of the Chengdu Institute of World Affairs, a think tank in Sichuan, China, said military cooperation between China and Pakistan, despite having no direct impact on India, could destabilize New Delhi.
“Even if China increases its cooperation with Pakistan’s navy, Beijing will not support a military war between India and Pakistan for any reason. Even if China increases its naval cooperation with the Pakistan Navy, it will have no impact on the border dispute between China and India.” Because even if China cooperates with Pakistan at sea, the border dispute with India will happen on land. Long believes.
But India opposes any military cooperation with Pakistan. India has been continuously opposing America or Russia supplying arms to Pakistan since the beginning. After China increased naval cooperation with Pakistan, it is expected that India will express its displeasure and protest.
China has had good relations with Pakistan for a long time. Pakistan is also a partner of China in the Belt and Road Initiative. In a meeting in Beijing last year, Chinese President Xi Jinping told Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif that China and Pakistan are good friends, allies and brothers. In recent years, these two countries have supported each other and proved their friendship despite constant global changes and instability.
