Kolkata, May 22 (Hindustan Times). The West Bengal government has decided to allot land to Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) for expansion of coal mines in the state to generate employment and boost business. This decision has been taken in the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at State Secretariat Nawan on Monday.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Minister Firhad Hakim said that the main objective of the state government is to promote employment. Therefore, this land has been given for preparation of new pit (excavation for coal mine) and expansion of coal mine. Apart from this, land will also be given to Eastern Railway for goods transportation and preparation of freight corridors.

ECL had petitioned the state government and said that new pits need to be dug for coal mining. Apart from this, land is also required for the expansion of mines. Due to scarcity of land, work was stopped in areas connected to ECL. After this, the state government has decided to give land in six areas of Asansol to ECL.

Hakim said coal mining is expected to increase and more people will get employment. Apart from this, it has been decided to give land to Eastern Railway in two areas adjacent to Jamuria for preparing the freight corridor. This will facilitate transportation of goods from West Bengal to other states.
