Kolkata: The state police has swung into action after 17 people were killed in bomb blasts in firecracker factories and houses in five places in the last eight days in West Bengal. Raids are being conducted across the state against illegal crackers businesses and more than 1.5 lakh kg of explosives have been seized in just four days, which will expose the deep network of illegal explosives collection in the state. A state police source said that 1 lakh 14 thousand 232 kg of crackers were seized during the search operation in various districts while 27 thousand 632 kg of gunpowder and other explosives were seized. Police sources have said that a raid and search operation has been launched since May 27 in which the explosive has been recovered. 252 FIRs have been registered for illegal storage and trade of these explosives while 143 people have been arrested. The seizures are basically from four districts including East Medinipur, Birbhum, Malda and South 24 Parganas.

It may be mentioned that the first explosion occurred in a firecracker factory in Agra, East Mednipur on Tuesday last week, in which 12 people were killed. Then three people were killed in an explosion in Bajbuj of South 24 Parganas. The very next day, an improvised explosive device exploded at the house of a Trinamool leader at Dubrajpur in Birbhum district, blowing away a wall of the house. A day before that, on Tuesday, a firecrackers godown in Malda’s Palika Bazaar exploded, killing two people. In the evening of the same day, a bomb stored at the house of a Trinamool leader in Bhangar in South 24 Parganas exploded, seriously injuring his wife. The functioning of the state administration is also under question due to one after another explosions and deaths of people in illegal firecrackers factories.
