ASCI Report: Advertising industry self-regulatory body ASCI on Wednesday said there has been a sharp rise in complaints against celebrities for their advertisements. The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) said in a report that 503 advertising-related complaints were filed against celebrities in the financial year 2022-23, an increase of 803 percent from 55 cases a year ago.

According to the report, celebrities are now legally required to undergo due diligence before being part of any advertisement under the Consumer Protection Act, but in 97 per cent of cases they failed to provide any proof of due diligence.

Among these celebrities, cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni leads with 10 complaints. Apart from him, there are seven cases against famous YouTuber Bhuvan Bam for non-compliance of advertisement conditions. Nearly half of the violations were found in ads related to gaming, education, healthcare and personal care products, the report said.

The advertising industry body received 8,951 complaints in the financial year 2022-23, of which it reviewed 7,928 ads. Notably, nearly three-quarters of the advertisements were released on digital media. “Such breaches in digital media raise serious concerns regarding the safety of consumers on online platforms,” ​​ASCI said.

 

The organization said that this (violation on digital media) raises serious concerns about the safety of consumers in the online space. Influencers are involved in a quarter of all complaints received by ASCI. The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) claims to be an independent, voluntary self-regulatory body set up to ensure that advertising in India is fair, honest and compliant with the ASCI Code.

Earlier in 2020, apart from Dhoni’s toothpaste ad, ASCI had also objected to advertisements for fans, bath soap and pain-relieving gel.
