Army Chief Manoj Pandey reaches Manipur, will review ground situation

Imphal, May 28 (Hindustan Times). Indian Army Chief General Manoj Pandey is in Manipur to review the law and order situation. Accompanied by GOC-in-C Eastern Command Lt Gen Rana Pratap Kalita, Gen Pandey landed at the Veer Tikendrajit Imphal International Airport on Saturday for his two-day visit to the state. Today, on the last day of the yatra, he will take part in several meetings.

A senior army officer said that Gen Pandey and Lt Gen Kalita have reached Imphal from Delhi to review the ground situation in the backdrop of ethnic conflict. General Pandey has met the Governor. Now he will also discuss with the Chief Minister and the Security Advisor. Gen Pande and Lt Gen Kalita will meet other force commanders and ground commanders to review the law and order situation.

Army sources said Gen Pandey and Lt Gen Kalita are scheduled to return today itself. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is reaching Manipur on Monday. It is understood that the purpose of the army chief’s visit before Shah’s visit is to assess the ground situation and apprise the Home Minister.
