Kathmandu:  Along with India, the festival of Vijayadashmi is being celebrated with great pomp in Nepal today. Nepal’s President Ramchandra Paudel and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli have greeted the people on the occasion of Vijayadashmi. They also appealed to help the people affected by the recent disasters to return to normal. The President wished peace, prosperity and happiness for all Nepalis on the tenth day of ‘Dasai’, the biggest festival of Hindus in Nepal. The Prime Minister also wished cooperation and harmony among all citizens. Here in India too, Dussehra is being celebrated today. PM Modi and President Draupadi Murmu have wished the countrymen the festival of victory of truth over untruth.

In a statement, Oli appealed to all Nepalis to help the disaster-affected people at a personal level to return to normalcy. He assured the people of the necessary help from the government to those who survived the disaster. Due to recent torrential rains, many parts of Nepal were hit by floods and landslides, resulting in 240 people losing their lives and thousands of others being displaced. Vijaya Dashami began on October 3. It is known here as Dasai. On the first day, Kalash Sthapana was done, which is known as Ghatasthapana and barley seeds were sown, which is called ‘Jamra’.

Dussehra is celebrated with great fervour in Nepal. The festival continues till Kojagra Purnima, which falls on October 17 this year. Every year, many people working in the Kathmandu Valley return to their homes for Dashain. The Federation of Nepali National Transport Entrepreneurs had initially estimated that about 18 lakh passengers would travel home from the valley by road. The Kathmandu Post newspaper quoted the Federation’s president Bijay Swar as saying that only 13 lakh people have travelled home since the first day of the festival. He said, “The reason for the low number of passengers is the damage to the roads due to floods and landslides following heavy rains on September 27 and 28.
