Former Prime Minister of Pakistan and President of PTI Imran Khan has suffered another major setback. In fact, Asad Umar, the chief of his economic party and a close ally, has resigned from all party posts. Omar took this decision after the May 9 violence, which is being investigated by the opposition government.

Khan is shocked by the resignation of Asad Umar

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party general secretary Asad Umar on Wednesday announced his resignation from all party posts soon after his release from Adiala Jail. In a press conference, it is not possible for me to lead the party under these circumstances. I am resigning from the post of General Secretary and Core Committee member of PTI. Omar said that he is not resigning from the party office under any pressure. However, he clarified that he has not left PTI but resigned from the party post.

Senior party leaders are continuously resigning

Omar also resigned a day after former information minister Fawad Chaudhary resigned from PTI on Wednesday. Following Chowdhury’s resignation, former Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazhari resigned. Mazari condemned the actions of supporters of the former prime minister, who attacked and torched sensitive defense installations across Pakistan on 9 May.

Many workers lost their lives in the violence

Violent protests erupted after Khan was arrested by paramilitary Rangers from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) premises on 9 May. In response to Khan’s arrest, PTI activists vandalized a dozen military installations, including the Lahore Corps Commander House, Mianwali Airbase and the ISI building in Faisalabad.

The Army Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi was also attacked by the mob for the first time. Police put the death toll in the violent clashes at 10, while Khan’s side claimed that 40 of his workers were killed in firing by security personnel.

‘Many innocent activists arrested’

The army has called May 9 a black day in the history of the country. Thousands of Khan’s supporters were arrested after the violence. In the wake of the unrest, several top PTI leaders were arrested, including Omar, Chowdhary and Mazari.

Omar said, “I think there should be a transparent inquiry against those involved in these incidents, but thousands of PTI workers and supporters have been arrested, many of whom are innocent. It is also important that they are brought to justice at the earliest.” ,

Idea of banning PTI party

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Sunday that those involved in attacks on military installations would be tried in military courts, while those accused of attacks would be tried under civilian law. Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said on Wednesday that the government is considering a possible ban on Khan’s PTI party following attacks by his supporters on military installations following the former prime minister’s arrest.
