Powassan virus is most commonly transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected deer or squirrel bite. Although cases of Powassan are rare, more cases have been reported in recent years. Symptom

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most people infected with Powassan virus have very few symptoms. It may take 1 week to 1 month for symptoms to appear in infected people. Early symptoms may include fever, headache, vomiting and weakness. Powassan virus can cause serious illness, including infection of the brain (encephalitis). Symptoms of severe illness include confusion, lack of coordination, difficulty speaking. If the disease becomes severe, 1 out of 10 people die.

Treatment

There is no medicine to prevent or treat Powassan virus infection. Antibiotics do not treat viruses. People who are severely infected with the virus require special treatment.
