A Sikh of Indian origin created history in England, Jaswant Singh became the first turbaned Lord Mayor

An Indian-origin Sikh councilor has created history by being appointed as the new Lord Mayor of the West Midlands city of Coventry in England. Jaswant Singh Birdie, the elected Lord Mayor of Coventry, will be the non-political and ceremonial head of the city. Was born in Punjab. Jaswant Singh and his family have been living in England for the last 60 years.

After assuming the post of Lord Mayor, Birdie said – I am very proud to be the Lord Mayor of Home City. He was given responsibilities as an official governor by the mayor at Coventry Cathedral’s annual general meeting last week. At that time Birdi had said that – Being a Sikh also means that I handled the responsibilities of this office with dignity. It will also help to show that we live in a multicultural city and inspire other cities as well.

Birdi was born in Punjab. He also lived in Lahore before independence and later in West Bengal. In the 1950s the family moved to Kenya in East Africa, where he received his primary and secondary education. Moved to UK in 60s for further education. He has been actively involved in setting up religious, social and community projects in the city apart from being a councillor.

 

Birdie has been living in England for the last 60 years. Birdie was a councilor in the city of Coventry for 17 years. He represented Babalke ward for 9 years. He also held Hillfield ward twice. He was successful in defeating Councilor Kevin Matton after holding the office of Deputy Lord Mayor for 1 year.
