Colombia : A Colombian court delivered a historic verdict on Wednesday. Under the ruling, Colombia has supported suicide in serious medical cases. Simply put, people with serious illness are allowed to commit suicide by medical authorities. Lawyers say Colombia is the first country in Latin America to implement this rule.

Will death be valid from 1997

Will death has been legal in Colombia since 1997. It was first used in January this year by a person suffering from an incurable disease.

When a person decides to end his life after consulting a doctor, it will be classified as assisted suicide. The decision was made after a lawsuit was filed by Colombian rights-to-die group DescLAB.

The organization argues that when a medical worker helps another person in a particular situation end their life, he or she will not be punished.

Until now, people who helped commit suicide to people with serious illnesses in Colombia were sentenced to between 16 and 36 months in prison. According to DescLAB, 127 such cases have been investigated between 2010 and August last year.

In addition to Colombia, some states in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Canada, Australia, Spain, Germany and the United States have allowed medical assisted suicide in such cases.
