Russia Ukraine War: Russian army retreated from around Kharkiv, fierce fighting in the eastern sector

Kyiv: Ukraine’s military said Russian troops were withdrawing from the northeastern city of Kharkiv and were now focusing their attention on protecting the supply route. He said the Russian army launched mortars, artillery as well as air strikes in the eastern Donetsk area to target Ukrainian troops and destroy their barricades.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said Ukraine was entering a new era of long-term war. Meanwhile, a delegation of the US Senate (upper house of Congress) led by Republican leader Mitch McConnell met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This meeting has been done to express America’s support for Ukraine. In a video shared on Zelensky’s Telegram account, McConnell, Susan Collins, John Brasso and John Cornyn are seen meeting him in the capital, Kyiv.

The Ukrainian president, in his Telegram post, described the visit as a strong sign of bipartisan support for Ukraine from the US Congress and the people. Russian President Vladimir Putin has turned his attention to the eastern Donbass region after failing to capture Kyiv after the February 24 attack. It is an industrial area where Ukraine has been fighting Moscow-backed separatists since 2014. The aim of the Russian army is to encircle Ukraine’s most experienced and highly skilled soldiers, who are stationed in the eastern sector. At the same time, its aim is to control the areas of Donbass and the rest of the territories occupied by Ukraine.

Airstrikes and artillery fires have made it very dangerous for journalists to work in the eastern sector, impeding efforts to get a more complete picture of the war. Russia has captured some villages and towns in the Donbass, including Rubizhnye, which had a population of about 55,000 before the war. Zelensky said Ukraine’s military had also made progress in the eastern region and recaptured six towns or villages. In his address on Saturday night, he said that the situation in the Donbass is very difficult and the Russian army is still trying to win one way or the other.

The President said that step by step we are forcing Russian troops to leave Ukrainian soil. Kharkiv, located near the Russian border, has been under heavy bombardment for weeks. Regional governor Oleh Sinegubov said there was no bombing in Kharkiv the previous day. He said Ukraine has launched an anti-aggression operation near Lyzium, a city south of Kharkiv. Oleh Zhdanov, an independent analyst for the Ukrainian military, said fighting broke out on the Sivsky Donets River near the city of Severodonetsk, but Ukraine failed to stop Russia’s advance. However, the Russian army has suffered a lot in the attack of Ukraine. At the same time, Zelensky has warned of a global food crisis due to the blocking of Ukrainian grain by Russia at the port.
