Refugees say Russian journalist announces sale of Nobel Peace Medal in support of Ukraine

Moscow: The war between Russia and Ukraine is still going on. Meanwhile, a prominent Russian journalist has announced that he will sell his Nobel Peace Medal in support of Ukraine. Russian journalist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dmitry Muratov is auctioning a Nobel medal in support of his country’s independent media and the destruction of war-ravaged Ukrainian refugees. He says there are very few people who support the Russian military campaign.

Muratov has been the co-founder and long-time editor-in-chief of the Beer newspaper. The newspaper, which openly criticizes the Kremlin, was founded in 1993 by former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev’s Nobel Peace Prize. For years, the newspaper has violated stringent restrictions on dissenting media. It finally shut down its online and print services in March.

Meaning of medal auction

“My country has invaded another country, Ukraine,” the Russian journalist told Reuters in an interview. So far 15.5 million people have lost their lives in this attack. We have been thinking for a long time what we can do for them (refugees). We thought that every refugee should give us something special. At the same time, the journalist said that the auction of his medal would mean that he has somehow done something for the fate of those refugees. Those who lost their monument and their entire past during this war.

need for human unity

Journalist Muratov said that now they (Russia) want to lose their (refugees’) future, but we must make sure that their future is secure. The most important thing we want to say and show during this war is that there is a great need for human unity.

It is noteworthy that this medal is being auctioned by Heritage Auctions on the Muratov World Refugee Day i.e. June 20 in collaboration with the Awards Committee. Muratov presented his award to six Novaya Gazeta journalists who were killed while reporting. Some of them were among the top critics of President Vladimir Putin.
