Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has made many shocking claims in his book. He said that in 2019, India and Pakistan were preparing for a ‘nuclear attack’ on each other. Pompeo claimed that he woke up to talk to his then Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj. Sushma Swaraj told him that after the Balakot surgical strike in February 2019, Pakistan was preparing for a nuclear attack and India was preparing to retaliate.
In his new book Never Give An Inch: Fighting for the America I Love, which hit the market Tuesday, Pompeo said the incident occurred while he was in Hanoi for the February 27-28 US-North Korea summit. He said his team worked through the night with both India and Pakistan to resolve the crisis. “I don’t think the world knows exactly how close the India-Pakistan rivalry came to a nuclear attack in February 2019,” Pompeo wrote in his book.
‘I’ll never forget that night’
The truth is, I don’t even know the exact answer, all I know is that it was pretty close. Indian warplanes destroyed a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist training camp in Pakistan’s Balakot in response to the Pulwama terror attack in February 2019, in which 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed. “I’ll never forget that night when I was in Hanoi, Vietnam,” Pompeo said.
America asked for time to fix everything
He said talks with the North Koreans on nuclear weapons are not enough as India and Pakistan have started threatening each other over the decades-old dispute over the Kashmir region on the northern border. He wrote, ‘Woke up to talk to my Indian counterpart in Hanoi. He believed that the Pakistanis had begun preparing their nuclear weapons for the attack. He told me that India is considering its response. I told them not to do anything and give us some time to fix everything.
