Maldives: Attack on Yoga program organized by Indian Embassy

Police used tear gas shells and paper spray to quell protesters who disrupted a yoga program organized by the Indian embassy in Maldivian capital Male.

On the occasion of International Yoga Day, the organizer of a yoga event in Maldives said on condition of anonymity that during the yoga event, a sudden mob killed the participants and ransacked the stadium. Around 150 people attended the yoga event, including ambassadors and government officials.

Earlier, the protesters had put up placards saying yoga was against the tenets of Islam. Islam is the main religion in the Maldives with a population of 50 million. Superintendent of Police Fatmat Nashwe said police used tear gas shells and paper spray to quell the protesters. Six people have been arrested in the incident.

Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said a police investigation into the incident was ongoing. Action will be taken against the violators.
