Los Angeles shooting suspect found dead in van, motive for attack not known

California, January 24 (Hindustan). The suspected gunman who killed 10 people during a Chinese Lunar New Year celebration in Los Angeles was found dead in a van on Sunday.

He had fled in the same van after failing to carry out the second incident of firing. There are bullet marks on his body. It is believed that he shot himself. Authorities are trying to determine the motive of the attacker, which has sent panic throughout Asian American communities.

Officials said the suspected attacker has been identified as 72-year-old Hu Can Tran. According to reports, a family member of the operator of the club where the incident took place had snatched the gun from the assailant.

The Monterey Park massacre is the fifth mass shooting in the country this month. It has targeted festivals celebrated in several Asian cultures in the state of California, another example of violent incidents against the community in the country.

This is the second biggest incident after the school shooting in Uvalde in the US state of Texas on May 24 last year. 21 people were killed in the Texas incident. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said there were no other suspects in the case. He told a press conference that the motive behind the attack was not yet known. Ten other people were also injured in the attack, of whom seven are still hospitalized.

Luna told a news conference on Sunday evening that the victims did not give their ages but they appeared to be in their 50s.

The sheriff said the suspect was carrying a semi-automatic pistol and a second handgun was recovered from the van in which he was found dead. Monterey Park Police Chief Scott Weiss said Sunday evening that officers were on the scene within three minutes of receiving a report of the shootings, where they found several bodies and people trying to escape through doors.

Luna said the gunman entered the Lai Lai Ballroom in the nearby Alhambra about 20-30 minutes after the first attack, but bystanders snatched his weapon from him and then fled.

The gunman reportedly entered the club and pointed the gun at Brandon Sey, who works a few days a week at the club started by his grandfather. Say said that knowing the intention of the gunman to harm people, I immediately grabbed his gun and we both had a struggle before gaining control of the weapon.

Police had said that more than one person was involved in the attack. Tse and his family said security footage showed the 26-year-old computer coder single-handedly stopped the attack from escalating.

Eyewitnesses said the suspect fled in a white van. The van was found 22 km from the scene in Torrance, a major residential area for many Asian American communities.

US President Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland were informed about the incident. Biden said he and First Lady Jill Biden expressed their condolences to the victims and directed federal authorities to assist with the investigation.
