Israel’s government fell again, elections were held for the fifth time in 3.5 years
This is the fifth general election in Israel in less than four years. The coalition government led by Naftali Bennett has collapsed and a major political crisis has erupted in the country. Elections could be held in Israel in late October. Under an agreement with Israeli PM Naftali Bennett, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid will take power for the next few days. Former prime minister and current opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to return to power.
On Monday, Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid agreed to dissolve parliament. Rumors have been swirling for weeks that Israel’s ruling coalition may be falling apart. In a joint statement, Bennett and Lapid reported the break-up of relations between their parties. It said both parliaments would bring a bill to dissolve it and elections were expected to be held in October.
An agreement was reached between Bennett and Lapid to form a government that would remove Netanyahu from power, with the current foreign minister acting prime minister. This means that US President Joe Biden, who is due to visit Israel next month, will be welcomed by Lapid instead of Bennett. The political mathematics of Israel is very interesting. The Bennett government had only one seat more than the opposition.
Netanyahu was constantly engaged in maneuvers to come to power. They were constantly trying to break the MPs involved in the Grand Alliance. The Arab Party of Israel was part of the ruling coalition but was angry with the government. The party alleges that Jews are being resettled in the Palestinian territories.
