Hungary’s first female president takes office

Budapest : Caitlin Novak, the first female president of Hungary, took office here.

On Tuesday, his predecessor, former head of state Janos Eder, greeted Novak at the entrance of the Sándor Palace, the residence of the Hungarian president, Xinhua news agency reported.

Eder and Novak marched together on the red carpet to the residence’s entrance, where they entered together.

Parliament elected Novak as president on 10 March.

After her election, Novak said she wanted to be a “president of peace.”

The official opening ceremony will take place on Saturday morning at Kosuth Square in front of Parliament.

Nowak is elected for a five-year mandate, and may be re-elected once according to the Fundamental Law.

Eder held the position for two terms.
