New Delhi: This morning’s earthquake in Afghanistan has caused huge loss of life and property. According to media reports, at least 950 people have been killed and more than 600 injured in the 6.1-magnitude earthquake. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the quake was reported 40 km south of Khost, Afghanistan. According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Center, the magnitude of the earthquake was 500 km. Hence tremors were felt in Afghanistan, Pakistan (also felt in Pakistan) and India.
Government spokesman Bilal Karimi tweeted: “Unfortunately four districts of Paktika province were hit by a strong earthquake last night.” In which hundreds of our countrymen were killed and injured and homes destroyed. We urge all emergency agencies to send teams to the area to prevent further destruction.
Abdul Wahid Ryan, a reporter for Afghanistan’s state news agency, tweeted that the death toll in Burmal, Ziruk, Naka and Gyan districts of Paktika province rose to 255, while 155 people were injured. Helicopters of security forces have reached the area to evacuate people from the area.
