Mumbai: A study conducted by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) revealed that a juvenile Greater Flamingo (small beautiful bird) covered a distance of 25 hours from Mumbai to the tiny desert of Kutch. So far Surkhab with four radio tags has reached Gujarat from Mumbai.

In a tweet on 29 July, the BNHS informed that our fourth radio-tagged flamingo named Lester has arrived in the small desert of Kutch. This well is named after the famous naturalist Captain CD Lester. The bird has completed the 500 km journey from Mumbai in 25 hours.

In an important study, scientists affiliated with the BNHS caught six succulents from their seaside habitats between January and April this year. After their capture, they were released with a solar-powered GPS-GSM tag.

The researchers noted that after tagging, these birds continued to roam the Thane Bay Flamingo Sanctuary and its surrounding wetland area.

The BNHS conducted the said study in collaboration with the Maharashtra Forest Department. A study was carried out to find out how small and large swamps migrate under the impact of the Mumbai Trans Harbor Link (MTHL) project. The study will also help researchers to know the route to the land of Surkhab and to take measures to protect them.
